As the community of practice for Liverpool's free legal advice sector, we bring together people from across the country who are passionate about making sure everyone has access to advice. In this podcast, we'll be in conversation with policy makers, politicians, and people who have been at the forefront of securing access to justice and advice for all.
EPISODE ONE: JILLIAN NEWTON
24th June 2025

In this the first recording of our Speaker Series, we chat with Jillian Newton about her perceptions of the challenges and opportunities facing the free legal advice sector.
Jill is a specialist criminal pupil barrister at Dere Street Barristers, and she began her career as a legal advisor working on the Hillsborough Inquest. Jill has also worked for the General Medical Council and as an advisor to the Chair of the public inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing. Jill has worked for Merseyside Police as a member of the Force Intelligence Bureau.
Jill has worked within the free legal advice sector, working for Shelter across Liverpool's prison system and for two Citizens Advice offices.
EPISODE TWO: JAMES ORGAN

In this episode we chat with Dr. James Organ, Reader in Law at the University of Liverpool and Associate Dean for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. James is also a co-founder of Liverpool Access to Advice Network.
Prior to starting his academic career, James worked for over a decade for Citizens Advice and it is through this work that he developed an academic interest in the area of Access to Justice. James' work has been published several times over and can be found by clicking here.
James works with Citizens Advice and other 3rd sector advice agencies, and the Liverpool Law Society in relation to Access to Justice issues.

EPISODE THREE: LIVERPOOL ADVOCATES FOR WINDRUSH
7th August 2025

In episode three of the Liverpool Access to Advice Network podcast, we meet with Liverpool Advocates for Windrush. We learn about the Windrush scandal, hear about the work their organisation is doing, and discover how you can access their support.
Liverpool Advocates for Windrush offer comprehensive and specialised support for people impacted by the Windrush scandal and its legacy of inequality. The provide help completing the Windrush compensation form, counselling services, and assistance with the status rectification form.
We chat with Tonika Stephenson, who is a barrister and joint founder of Liverpool Advocates for Windrush. We also meet Xenaris and Molly, students at Liverpool John Moores University who volunteer for Liverpool Advocates for Windrush. EPISODE FOUR: JANE CORBETT

In this episode we talk with Councillor Jane Corbett, the Liverpool City Councillor for Everton West. Jane has been the Labour Ward Councillor for Everton since 2002 and served as Deputy Mayor of Liverpool and as Mayoral Lead for Anti-Poverty. Jane was pivotal in securing the funding which led to our establishment in 2020.
We chat about Jane's upbringing and about how her values have influenced the years of exceptional service she has undertaken in Liverpool. We also discuss how Jane recently helped a constituent with a complex housing issue. This conversation highlights the exceptional demand facing our sector and the need for sustained investment in our work.
EPISODE FOUR: BARONESS JONES OF MOULSECOOMB

In episode five of the Liverpool Access to Advice Network podcast, we talk with Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb. Jenny Jones has been a Green Party peer in the House of Lords since 2013 when she was nominated by the wider party membership. Jenny has consistently been vocal in support of social justice and environmental causes.
Jenny served as a Member of the London Assembly between 2000 and 2016 and as Deputy Mayor of London between 2003 and 2004. Jenny is also the former Chair of the London Food Board, a mayoral body established to build better food systems for Londoners.
Jenny was introduced to the House of Lords as Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb in November 2013, taking the name of the estate in Brighton on which she was born.
